Education

I hold a B.M.S. cum laude from Berklee College of Music, with a concentration in Private Instruction and Studio Recording (1997). My education also includes technical training in performance from the Musician’s Institute/Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA (1992–1993) and three years of study in social sciences, psychology, economics, and English composition at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1988–1991).

Six String Academics

Teaching Approach

As a consistent 5-star rated affiliate guitar teacher on Takelessons.com (2012–2018), I am known for being a knowledgeable and patient instructor, working effectively with students of all ages and skill levels. My teaching integrates the Berklee and Musician’s Institute methods, along with Hal Leonard and Mel Bay publications, while evolving toward a methodology of my own. My approach is tailored, not rigid, focusing on each student’s personal motivation and musical journey.

EXPERIENCE

I’m a lifelong musician, performer, and teacher with a passion for sharing the joy of music. I’ve played with talented artists and bands such as The Myxx, Odyssey, The Fabulous Bad Cats, Mystic Mama, and more, and have co-hosted open jam nights at beloved Northwest venues—including my own Portland spot, The Great Hall.

As a teacher, I’ve worked with students of all ages through Best Buy, Takelessons, Arts Academy, and Garden Home Parks & Recreation, focusing on building skill, confidence, and creativity. Whether on stage or in the lesson room, my mission is simple—help others connect with music and discover their own unique sound.
